Why natural stone suits Sunshine Coast homes
Stone is naturally suited to the way we live up here. It stays cool underfoot in summer, which matters on a poolside or an alfresco area that catches afternoon sun. Its tonal range — the creams, honeys and soft greys that dominate Australian stone — sits naturally against the light here, and pairs easily with timber, white render and the greenery of a coastal garden.
It also ages well. Where a manufactured surface tends to look tired as it wears, stone develops a patina. A travertine pool surround that has been walked on for fifteen years generally looks better than it did on day one, not worse.
The stone we stock
- Travertine — the most popular choice for pool surrounds and alfresco areas. Warm cream and walnut tones, comfortable underfoot, and naturally slip-resistant in a tumbled or unfilled finish.
- Limestone — soft, even and understated, with far less veining than marble. Excellent for large floor areas and contemporary interiors where you want calm rather than drama.
- Marble — the classic choice for bathrooms, vanity tops and feature walls, with the veining and depth that only real marble delivers.
- Granite — the hardest of the natural stones, and the reason it dominates our cobble range: ideal for driveways, borders and high-traffic areas.
- Stone wall cladding — travertine, sandstone and mixed-stone panels, warm and textural, particularly effective on garden walls and entry facades.

Formats and cuts
The same stone reads very differently depending on how it’s cut and laid:
- Pavers and tiles — regular rectangular formats for floors, patios and pool surrounds, in French pattern, ashlar or straight-lay.
- Crazy paving — irregular pieces fitted together for an organic, free-form finish. Beautiful on courtyards, pathways and feature walls.
- Cobbles — small tumbled squares for driveways, borders and textured wall detail.
- Wall cladding — stacked, dry-stack and random-ashlar panels that turn a plain wall into the focus of a room or facade.
- Stone mosaics — for shower floors, splashbacks and feature bands, where the smaller format adds grip and detail.
Where natural stone works best
Pool surrounds and alfresco areas. This is where stone earns its keep on the Sunshine Coast. Travertine and limestone stay cool, drain well and provide grip when wet.
Entries and facades. A stone-clad entry wall or pier gives a house immediate substance and weathers gracefully in salt air.
Bathrooms. Marble and limestone bring a spa quality to a bathroom that tile struggles to imitate — particularly on a vanity top or a full-height shower wall.
Interior floors and feature walls. Large-format limestone or a crazy-pave feature wall gives an interior texture and warmth without any additional colour.
Caring for stone in a coastal climate
Natural stone is porous, so it does need sealing — this is the main practical difference between stone and porcelain. A quality penetrating sealer applied on installation, and topped up every few years depending on exposure, is usually all that’s required. Clean with a pH-neutral cleaner rather than anything acidic or bleach-based, as acids will etch limestone and marble.
Near the beach, give exterior stone a rinse with fresh water now and then to clear salt build-up. It’s a small amount of maintenance for a surface that will comfortably outlast the house around it.
